Even though it’s not quite Christmas time yet, Jim Carrey’s animated remake of A Christmas Carol scored the top sport at the box office this weekend!

The film, a remake of the Charles Dickens classic, took in $31 million to claim its top spot, knocking off Michael Jackson’s This Is It, which fell to second with $14 million.

The big box office news this weekend came from Oprah Winfrey’s film Precious, which did noy crack the top 10, but only because it only played in 18 theaters! Despite the low number of screens, Precious still brought in $1.8 million, which is $100,000 a cinema (compared to A Christmas Carol’s $8,418 per cinema).

The other big news was that Cameron Diaz’s latest movie, The Box, opened very weak with just $7.9 million, good enough for 6th.

Third was the George Clooney comedy The Men Who Stare At Goats, with $13.3 million, just ahead of the fourth place movie, fittingly, horror movie The Fourth Kind, with 12.5 million, followed by Paranormal Activity with $8.6 million.
